Protected Areas, the Wealth to Invest in
Development and management of protected areas must be the interest of the wider community, as it was pointed out at the workshop "What is a national park for me?" held on February 1, 2013 in Mostar as a part of the Campaign to Raise Public Awareness of the Values and the Positive Effects of Protected Forest and Mountain Areas in the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
The workshop brought together representatives of local communities from the municipalities Posušje, Konjic and Mostar. The participants were provided with insights on the specific characteristics of the concept of protected areas, with the aim of presenting the advantages of national parks for the local population, and the possible reasons "for" and "against" the protection of the area. "National parks and protected areas are firstly necessary in order to protect our very rich biodiversity. The main problems that we have in the management of protected areas are related to the incompatibility of the existing legislation in the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina and the quite undefined system of management of the protected areas," stated professor Dalibor Ballian from the Faculty of Forestry, University of Sarajevo during the workshop.
