Desertification, along with climate change and the loss of biodiversity, were identified as the greatest challenges to sustainable development during the 1992 Rio Earth Summit. Established in 1994, UNCCD (United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification) is the sole legally binding international agreement linking environment and development to sustainable land management. The Convention addresses specifically the arid, semi-arid and dry sub-humid areas, known as the drylands, where some of the most vulnerable ecosystems and peoples can be found.
CSOs are key partners for development and implementation of UNCCD strategies and initiatives.
UNCCD promotes the active involvement of CSOs in the implementation of the Convention at all levels, and representatives from CSOs that are accredited to the UNCCD Conference of the Parties (COP) may directly participate in its sessions. As of June 2017, 314 CSOs can now be accredited to the UNCCD COP.
The CSO Panel brings together representatives from different existing networks working on desertification.
As of 2014 fea is a focal point for CEE and important part of the initiative to increase the participation of NGOs in UNCCD activities and procedures. If you are the CSO operating in Central and Eastern Europe, and would like to get more information about he UNCCD CSO activities, want to engage in active participation, please contact us. The Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) of the Global Environment Facility (GEF), now known as the GEF-CSO Network, was established in May, 1995, as a result of a GEF decision to establish a formal dialogue and partnership between NGOs worldwide. The GEF-NGO Network is made up of GEF-accredited organizations whose work in environment and sustainable development is aligned with the GEF mandate. The GEF-CSO Network is overseen by a Coordination Committee composed of focal points from different geographic regions and representatives of Indigenous People’s Organizations (IPOs).
fea is the first NGO from Bosnia and Herzegovina to joint the Network, and one of few NGOs from the South East Europe to hold the membership. Based on this new membership, we will have the opportunity to participate in the work the Network’s Europe Region, contribute to GEF’s policy making, and vote and eligible to candidate for the Regional Focal Point.
We intend to work toward increasing the number memberships of NGOs in the Network coming from South East Europe, and to ensure enhanced contribution of our region in GEF-NGO Network and GEF policy making in the future.
