Development of the first UNCCD NAP in FYR Macedonia

First meeting for the project Support to the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia for Development of National Action Programme (NAP) aligned to the UNCCD 10-Year Strategy and Reporting Process under UNCCD was held on 5th November starting at 11:00 am, which brought together over 50 participants, including the majority of experts in the field of land protection, representatives of public institutions and non-governmental sectors. This meeting initiated the project for a period of one year which implementation will assess the current state of land in Macedonia, and will be based on identified priorities for protection to create a unique action plan.
Creation of National Action Plan (NAP) is implemented by the Ministry of Environment and Spatial Planning of the Government of the Republic of Macedonia with the support of the Program for the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) offices in Vienna and funded by the Global Environment Facility (GEF). This project is the result of efforts to impement the Convention of the United Nations to combat land degradation by Macedonia ratified in 2002, and by which that obligation of creating NAP was planed in accordance with the 10-year strategy of the Convention.
During the meeting, the current situation in terms of land degradation in Macedonia was presented by the Department of Cooperation and coordination of projects of the Ministry of Environment and Spatial Planning, and the meeting was attended by delegations from UNEP in Vienna, who spoke about the development of the project and its importance for Macedonia. Among the other things, participants had the opportunity to discuss the topics and adsress the questions presented.
