Fostering National Soil Partnership

20th April 2017

December 18 , 2018

The event Fostering National Soil Partnership was organized by UN Environment, Serbian Environmental Protection Agency (SEPA) and Forestry and Environmental Action – fea with the aim to celebrate World Soil Day (WSD) in Belgrade, Serbia. The event was organized on December 17, 2018 in Hotel Metropol Palace in Belgrade. Main objective of the event was to gather in one place all stakeholder groups in the soil area (government institutions, NGOs, international organizations, research and scientific organizations, private companies) and to foster establishment of national soil partnership. Additionally, the event was an opportunity to present all the results related to the protection of land degradation. Key stakeholders including local and national government officials, representatives of the Ministry of Environmental Protection, cross-sectoral working group members (SEPA, Serbian Institute of Geology, Institute of Soil Science, Institute for Field and Vegetable Crops, Institute for Public Health Protection Belgrade, Provincial Secretariat for Urban Planning and Environmental Protection), representatives of the Serbian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, representatives of international organizations (UNIDO, UNDP, UNFAO) and scientific and research institutions such as Faculty of Agriculture, Institute for Applied Nuclear Energ and Forestry Institute were gathered at this two-hour event in an effort to raise awareness on the importance of land degradation, sustainable land management and land degradation neutrality, presenting the results accomplished in the area of research, protection and prevention of land degradation and publications: State of the Soil Report 2016-2017, the Guidelines and Brochure for Sustainable Land Management at the local level in the Republic of Serbia, the Publication on the state of contaminated sites in the Republic of Serbia, as well as the comprehensive website dedicated to land degradation and sustainable land management (www.degradacijazemljista.rs).

In the spirit of partnership and strengthening cooperation between different actors, the event was an opportunity for other partners and stakeholders in the soil area to present similar undertaken activities and initiatives.

One of the conclusions at the institutional event was that scientific community, civil society and decision makers in Serbia have also made a considerable effort and should continue to include soil protection into one of the most important legal frameworks for development in the coming decades, which is in accordance with the Sustainable Development Goals adopted by the UN General Assembly in September 2015.

The event for WSD celebration was organized and held in the frame of UNEP/GEF project Enhanced Cross-Sectoral Land Management through Land Use Pressure Reduction and Planning  in Republic of Serbia, that has been implemented by UN Environment in a partnership with SEPA and supported by fea.
