Global Biodiversity Framework Early Action Support (GBF-EAS) – Bosnia and Herzegovina: Activity and Alignment of Objectives with the Global Biodiversity Framework

Summary of the project:

The GBF-EAS project, funded by the Global Environment Facility (GEF), accelerated readiness and early actions for the implementation of the post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF), which aims to halt and reverse biodiversity loss. Building on the Strategic Plan for Biodiversity 2011–2020, the project supported GEF-eligible Parties in aligning their National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans (NBSAPs) with the GBF targets and relevant Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The project was structured around four core components:

• Rapid review of NBSAPs for alignment with the post-2020 GBF

• Assessment of biodiversity monitoring systems

• Policy and institutional alignment and coherence with the Global Biodiversity Framework

• Biodiversity finance activities

Project goals:

The main objective of the project was to fast-track readiness and early actions for the implementation of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework by providing financial and technical support to GEF-eligible Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) in reviewing and aligning their national targets, NBSAPs, policy and monitoring frameworks, and finance plans with the Global Biodiversity Framework.

Expected results and main activities:

The project was structured around four core components:

1. Alignment of NBSAPs with the GBF

• Rapid review and alignment of national targets with the GBF

• Development of operational plans for NBSAP updates

• Stakeholder engagement to ensure inclusive and measurable targets

2. Strengthening Monitoring Systems

• Assessment of gaps in biodiversity monitoring

• Development of action plan and capacity-building support

• Improved data systems for reporting and decision-making

3. Policy and Institutional Coherence

• Review of policy and institutional frameworks

• Identification of gaps and synergies across sectors

• Development of action plan for biodiversity mainstreaming

4. Biodiversity Finance

• Assessment of biodiversity expenditures and financing gaps

• Identification of harmful subsidies and financing opportunities

• Development of biodiversity finance plan and resource mobilization strategy
