Summary of the project:

The project focused on the conservation and long-term monitoring of large carnivore populations in the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina, including brown bear (Ursus arctos), wolf (Canis lupus), and Eurasian lynx (Lynx lynx). It aimed to establish a comprehensive and scientifically robust baseline of their distribution, abundance, and health status, addressing key pressures such as habitat degradation, human–wildlife conflict, and population decline.

Through systematic data collection and analysis, the project supported evidence-based decision-making and the development of targeted conservation measures, contributing to the long-term viability of these species and overall biodiversity protection in FBiH.

Project goals:

The main objective of the project was to establish a comprehensive inventory and monitoring system for large carnivores in FBiH, providing a reliable data foundation for conservation planning, policy development, and management interventions.

Expected results and main activities:

The main activities included:

  • Preparation of a preliminary habitat map using GIS analysis based on existing data on large carnivore presence

  • Organization of workshops with hunting associations and forestry stakeholders to collect field data and assess human–wildlife interactions

  • Implementation of field surveys, including non-invasive genetic sampling, camera trapping, and indirect monitoring methods

  • Laboratory analysis of collected samples, including genetic and health (parasitological/zoonotic) assessments

  • Development of a comprehensive inventory, including GIS datasets, presence maps, photo documentation, and analytical reports

  • Integration of collected data into the Nature Protection Information System of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina

The expected project results were:

  1. Comprehensive database on the distribution, abundance, and health status of large carnivores in FBiH

  2. GIS-based habitat and presence maps identifying key areas of permanent and occasional occurrence

  3. Improved understanding of human–large carnivore interactions and coexistence challenges

  4. Scientific basis for conservation planning and future monitoring

  5. Strengthened capacity of institutions for wildlife monitoring and biodiversity management
