Summary of project:
The project aims to develop a comprehensive Valorisation Study (Expert Justification) for the protection of the Una River corridor within the territory of the City of Bosanska Krupa. The study provides a scientific and professional assessment of the area’s natural, cultural, and landscape values, with a focus on biodiversity conservation, ecosystem services, and sustainable resource use.
It serves as a basis for initiating the legal protection process, including proposals for zoning, boundaries, tailored protection measures, and an economic rationale for establishing a protected landscape. By integrating ecological, social, and economic aspects, the project supports a balanced approach to conservation, sustainable tourism, education, and research.
Project objective
General objective:
To prepare a scientifically grounded Valorisation Study establishing the natural, cultural, and economic rationale for the protection of the Una River landscape as a designated protected area.
Specific objectives:
Analyze abiotic and biotic characteristics of the Una River corridor, with a focus on rare and endangered species listed in the Red List of the Federation of BiH
Identify key pressures, threats, and potential land-use conflicts
Assess ecosystem services and their relevance for local communities
Define proposed protection boundaries and zoning in line with national legislation and IUCN standards
Estimate costs of establishing protection and assess economic benefits for the community
Propose sustainable land-use measures integrating conservation, tourism, education, and research
Key project activities:
Data collection and analysis – review of existing data and literature, field research on natural and cultural values, and integration into GIS
Assessment of pressures and ecosystem services – stakeholder consultations to identify threats and evaluate ecosystem services for planning purposes
Definition of protection measures and zoning – delineation of boundaries and zones, development of protection measures, and assessment of costs and benefits in line with legal and international frameworks
Promotion and stakeholder engagement – organization of stakeholder workshops, development of promotional materials, and dissemination of information to raise awareness on the importance of protection
Expected project outcomes:
