The Balkan Nature Talks Conference 2024, held on October 10–11 at the Vienna International Centre,

brought together key stakeholders to discuss pressing issues surrounding biodiversity conservation in

the Western Balkans. Forestry and Environmental Action (FEA) proudly participated in this significant

event, joining experts, policymakers, and environmental advocates to address the region’s most

pressing environmental challenges.

The Western Balkans, known for its rich natural habitats, biological diversity, and unique karst

landscapes, faces growing threats from rapid urbanization, climate change, and pollution. Despite its

importance as part of Europe’s natural heritage, the region’s ecosystems are increasingly vulnerable to

degradation and fragmentation.

The conference highlighted the critical need for immediate action to protect the biodiversity of the

Western Balkans, with a particular focus on accelerating efforts toward the implementation of the

Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF). Adopted in 2022, the GBF sets ambitious

global targets for biodiversity conservation, urging countries to take proactive measures to halt

biodiversity loss. The alignment of National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans (NBSAPs) with the

GBF was a central topic, emphasizing the importance of regional contributions to global biodiversity

goals.

As part of broader discussions, the event featured presentations and panels on global and regional

trends, tools, and actions for biodiversity conservation. Participants explored challenges in

implementation and enforcement while sharing best practices for sustainable management.

Additionally, the conference addressed funding opportunities for biodiversity projects and explored

ways to integrate biodiversity conservation into broader UN frameworks, such as the Common Country

Analysis (CCAs) and the UN Sustainable Development Cooperation Frameworks (UNSDCFs).

As the region continues to face significant environmental challenges, the Balkan Nature Talks

Conference served as a platform for fostering collaboration, sharing knowledge, and aligning efforts to

protect biodiversity for future generations. FEA remains dedicated to contributing to all of these efforts.
