At the beginning of December, the project “Cross-border Fire Prevention Initiative in National Park Tara
and Protected Landscape Trebević through the LFM Framework” was officially launched in Skopje, North
Macedonia.

The project represents a significant step forward in protecting natural resources and promoting
sustainable landscape management in the Western Balkans and focuses on implementing advanced
satellite technologies for early fire detection and monitoring in National Park Tara (Serbia) and the
Protected Landscape Trebević (Bosnia and Herzegovina). By fostering cross-border collaboration and
strengthening the resilience of ecosystems, the project addresses the pressing challenges of climate
change and increasing wildfire risks in the region.
Key objectives of the project include:
Development of technical solutions for fire detection and management in these protected areas,
Pilot testing of innovative satellite-based technologies to enhance fire prevention and monitoring,
Cross-border cooperation strenghtening and fostering a collaborative approach to fire management,
Education and awareness raising of local communities about fire prevention and environmental conservation.
We are proud to collaborate with the Cantonal Public Institution for Protected Nature Areas of the
Sarajevo Canton (KJU ZPP KS) and National Park Tara as project partners, whose dedication and
collaborative efforts have been essential to achieving the project’s objectives.
The project is part of the “Landscape Fire Management in the Western Balkans” (LFMWB) program,
funded by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC). It is coordinated by Farmahem in
North Macedonia, with backstopping support from HELVETAS Swiss Intercooperation. Over the next 13
months, the project will bridge innovative technologies, expert knowledge, and local community
engagement to create safer and more sustainable protected areas.
