After the lessons learned in the Albanian Alps, where we confronted the realities of overtourism, fragile ecosystems, and the urgent need for climate-smart action, our journey continued further east. This time, we traded alpine valleys for vast steppes and towering peaks.

What does it mean to “walk the talk” in conservation? For us at FEA, it meant lacing up our boots in Valbona and crossing the hiking trail to Theth, not only to admire Albania’s alpine beauty but also to confront firsthand the challenges of managing mountain protected areas in a rapidly changing climate.

At the beginning of December, the project “Cross-border Fire Prevention Initiative in National Park Tara and Protected Landscape Trebević through the LFM Framework” was officially launched in Skopje, North Macedonia.

The project “Policies and strategies for environmental protection and preservation of pastoral systems and local livestock breeds in the Adriatic Ionian region” (ECOBREEDS) officially began with the Kick-off meeting and First Transnational Workshop, held from October 31 to November 1, 2024, at the Aristotle University Research Dissemination Center in Thessaloniki, Greece.

Representatives from nine countries convened to review the project's progress, discuss its objectives, assess its financial status, and highlight key achievements. This critical meeting set the stage for future activities, with partners aligning on next steps and deadlines. The meeting's collaborative atmosphere reinforced the shared commitment to empowering young women and increasing their involvement in the forestry sector.

We are excited to announce the launch of the project “Preparation of an Expert Assessment for the Designation of Pliva Lakes as a Protected Area, along with the Draft of the Law” which aims to establish Pliva Lakes as a protected area in Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH), ensuring the conservation of its biodiversity, natural and cultural values, while promoting the sustainable development of the local community.

The Balkan Nature Talks Conference 2024, held on October 10–11 at the Vienna International Centre, brought together key stakeholders to discuss pressing issues surrounding biodiversity conservation in the Western Balkans. Forestry and Environmental Action (FEA) proudly participated in this significant event, joining experts, policymakers, and environmental advocates to address the region’s most pressing environmental challenges.

From September 9 to 11, 2024, Forestry and Environmental Action (fea) took part in the Dialogue for Central and Southeastern Europe, held in Chișinău, Moldova.
